Chapter Twenty One

Milly

‘Step away from me, Mum, or I’ll do it!’ The shout from the teenager rang through Milly’s brain. She stood in the kitchen of a country farmhouse. Dark wood lined the cupboard doors. The square granite work surface in the middle of the room was sparkling, reflecting the hanging pots and pans overhead. The walls were stone and the floor was slate. Milly loved the style of the room. The boy stood on one side of the work station, holding a knife in the air. The sharp edge glinted in the sun as it shone through the window.

‘Joseph, please,’ the young woman cried from the other side of the room. She had mousy bobbed hair and was wearing an apron over a summer dress.

‘Just stop pretending, Mum, you’re not in love with him. He bought you. You would never live somewhere like this if he hadn’t paid for you.’ The boy was tall; his head just missed the overhead contraption of pans. His dark hair curled around his neck. He had a tattoo of a dragon on his arm and wore a bright yellow t-shirt.

‘He didn’t pay for me, love, I’m here because I need to be,’ she cried.

‘You put me at risk. You let him beat me…you...you…’ The boy’s face was screwed up as he screamed. His fists were clenched. One palm squeezed around the handle of the blade as he thrashed it about. His mother stood still. Milly watched from where she sat on the worktop. It was the woman she was waiting for. The man that they were talking about was on his way home. The telephone conversation between the mother and her husband a few minutes ago had caused the outburst from the young son. Milly’s research had found that for years the woman had tried to find a way to get away from her older abusive husband. Ten years ago she’d been chucked onto the streets by her parents. She’d met a man who’d taken her and her baby into his home. After a while, he’d persuaded her to marry him. When the wedding bells had died down, the true personality of her saviour had started to shine through. His fists too often flew out and connected with her cheek. Her son’s head was too often coming into contact with wooden doors. Before they’d married, the man had told her a secret, a government secret that she’d sworn to keep. That was why they were trapped here now.

‘Why won’t you let me leave? Why did you have to call him? I HATE YOU!’ he screamed.

‘Wow, this is dramatic,’ a voice made Milly jump. Reese had appeared on the counter next to her.

‘Blimey, I wish you wouldn’t do that,’ she said, looking back at the family.

‘Please, love, I know you don’t think it, but I’m doing this to protect you.’ The mother paused at the sound of a car pulling up in front of the house.

‘He’s gonna hurt me now, Mum. You watch as he breaks my head in again.
